(Reuters) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was prepared to intervene militarily if the referendum on Kurdish independence results in violence. “If the Iraqi population is threatened with the use of force outside the law, we will intervene militarily,” Abbadi said in an interview with the Associated Press on Saturday. The Kurdistan region plans to hold a referendum on supporting independence from Iraq on September 25 in three provinces that form its autonomous region and in the disputed areas controlled by Kurdish forces, but demanded by Baghdad.
