KRG DELEGATION TO VISIT BAGHDAD SUNDAY FOR TALKS ON BUDGET, SAYS MINISTER

Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of State Khalid Shwani (File)

SULAIMANI — A delegation from the Kurdistan Region will visit Baghdad on Sunday (December 1) for talks about the 2020 federal budget, a senior official has said.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of State Khalid Shwani told reporters on Saturday that the delegation will hold talks with the federal Ministry of Finance about the Region’s share of the budget, which currently stands at 12.67 percent.

Regarding the resignation of Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, Shwani said the Kurdistan Region makes agreements with the government, not a specific person.

“All of our attempts are to make the understandings between the Region and Baghdad reach a final agreement,” he added.

Abdul Mahdi submitted his letter of resignation to the Council of Representatives on Saturday and later called on the parliament to find an alternative as soon as possible as the country does not go through any power vacuum.

The KRG and the federal government reached an agreement last week to resolve their ongoing disagreement over oil.

Minister of Oil Thamer Ghadhban said the KRG had agreed to export 250,000 barrels of oil per day through Baghdad to Turkey’s Ceyhan next year.

Oil is just one of several persistent disagreements between the two governments, which also include security and the disputed areas.

Coordinator of the Council of Representatives’ Finance Committee Ahmed Safar said on Wednesday that Baghdad is expected to send nearly one trillion Iraqi dinars ($838 million) per month to the Kurdistan Region in 2020 after Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement over oil exports and the budget.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi on Saturday formally submitted his resignation to parliament.

Abdul-Mahdi said in a cabinet session that the resignation is required for calm, and that it comes in response to the speech of the Supreme Religious authority.

He said the government would remain a caretaker government, including the prime minister and ministers, so that we would not leave a power vacuum.

Abdul Mahdi said that in Iraq, “we are no longer dictatorial governments and governments resign and renew the youth of the country.”

On Friday, Abdul Mahdi announced his intention to resign shortly after Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called on the Iraqi parliament to withdraw confidence from the government.

Iraqi government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi said parliament would determine the legal status of Adel Abdul-Mahdi’s government after accepting his resignation in accordance with the constitution.

The Iraqi parliament is due to hold a session on Sunday to vote on the resignation request of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, a time when Iraq has not seen the departure of a prime minister before the end of his term, since the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein in 2003.

On the ground, Iraqis are continuing their protests in Baghdad and southern areas on Saturday, calling the resignation of the prime minister “unconvincing” and insisting on “the removal of all symbols of corruption.”

The current popular movement is the largest in Iraq in decades and the bloodiest, with more than 420 people killed and 15 thousand wounded in Baghdad and the Shiite-dominated south, since the outbreak of demonstrations on the first of last October
