Abadi announces the liberation of all Nineveh province after the restoration of the last pockets of «state» in Tal Afar

Sep 01, 2017

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Thursday declared victory over the organization of the state in Tal Afar and the entire province of Nineveh.
Tal Afar became the next target of the US-backed war on the “state” following the restoration of Mosul, where the organization announced the establishment of a “caliphate” on parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014, and Mosul, capital of Nineveh province.
“We liberated the Tal Afar,” Abbadi said in a statement. “We say to the criminals: wherever you are, we are coming for liberation and you have no choice but to die or surrender.”
Iraqi forces waited until the small town of Ayyadiyah, 11 kilometers north-west of Tal Afar, was cleared to declare full victory in its campaign. The organization’s militants are retreating to the town.
“Units from the Iraqi army and the federal police, supported by units of the popular crowd, have recovered Ayadiyah after days of fierce and unexpected fighting,” army officers said.
But there are still pockets of resistance and Iraqi forces are working to clear the town of the rest of the elements of the “state.”
“There must be no other terrorists hiding in the houses of the town,” said Lieutenant Colonel Salah Karim. Hundreds of additional troops arrived in Ayadiyah on Wednesday after Iraqi forces came under mounting pressure to expel the state fighters from their last stronghold in the former stronghold of the group.
Iraqi forces faced an unexpected battle in Ayadiyah and fought a street-to-house street war in the center of the town.
“They will not be allowed to flee,” al-Abbadi said in his statement.
The number of people holed up in Tal Afar was estimated at about 2,000 in the face of 50,000 government troops last week, and it was not clear how many returned to Ayadiyah.
“This great victory ends the liberation of Tal Afar and the complete liberation of the province of Nineveh,” the commander of the joint operations of Iraq, the commander of operations «come Tal Afar» team commander Abdul Amir Rashid Yaarallah.
“The Iraqi army forces and the popular crowd completed yesterday (morning) the liberation of the Ayyad district completely after heavy fighting in the last two days,” said Colonel Ahmed al-Jubouri, commander of the Ninewa operations of the army.
He explained that “the Iraqi warplanes chasing the remnants of the state organization in the mountain range north of Ayadiyah fled towards the direction of Rabia and the Sinjar district and firing automatic fire at the elements of the organization fleeing towards the mountain chain,” without mentioning the toll of the losses.
In the context, the US embassy in Baghdad, said that the organization “state” lost 90% of the territory that was controlled in Iraq after the restoration of Iraqi forces province of Nineveh (north).
“The US Embassy in Iraq congratulates Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the Iraqi security forces and the Iraqi people on the rapid liberation of the city of Tal Afar and Nineveh province entirely from the control of the state organization,” a statement from the embassy in Baghdad said.
“We have seen clearly the state of weakness and despair of the fighters of the state organization during their retreat to a unified force including the Iraqi army and the anti-terrorism and the federal police and local police and popular mobilization forces and Kurdish peshmerga.”
“Thanks to the close cooperation between these forces and the advisers of the United States and the international coalition (led by Washington), the state now lost 90 percent of the Iraqi territory it controlled,” the statement said.
Five Iraqi soldiers were killed and 13 wounded in two attacks targeting a security checkpoint and a military patrol in the northern provinces of Baghdad and Salahaddin, security sources said.
Three unidentified gunmen believed to be linked to the state organization launched a grenade and machine-gun attack on a security checkpoint for members of the Sunni-dominated Sunni tribal bloc in Abu Ghraib district, 20 km west of Baghdad, the police captain said.
He pointed out that the attack resulted in the killing of 3 of the «tribal crowd» and wounding 5 others injured, pointing out that the perpetrators fled to an unknown destination immediately after the attack.
In the province of Salah al-Din, north of the country, two soldiers were killed by the Iraqi army and wounded eight others after a bomb explosion targeting a military patrol in the outskirts of «Balad» south of the province, according to police lieutenant, Noman al-Jubouri.
He said that “the attack is the first of its kind targeting security forces in the area of Balad (predominantly Shiite) as it is far from the northern areas of Salahaddin province, which is active in the organization of the state».
The northern areas of Salah al-Din, close to the administrative borders of the provinces of Diyala and Kirkuk (north), are witnessing almost daily “terrorist” operations carried out by elements of the “state.”
The organization is still in control of a large pocket southwest of Kirkuk, including Hawija and Riyadh and Zab districts. Kurdish forces control the rest of the province since the withdrawal of the Iraqi army forces before the invasion of the state’s armed forces to the north and west of the country in the summer of 2014.
Over the past months, the state has lost vast territory of those it seized in the north of the country in 2014 as a result of an internationally backed government campaign, most notably its stronghold of Mosul, which it defeated last month.
