US General Paul Funk led the US-led international coalition against a pro-Iraqi organization in Iraq and Syria on Tuesday.
General Funk assumed command of the joint forces of Operation Solid Steel at a ceremony at a military base in the area, officials said in a statement. General Funk took over from General Stephen Townsend, who took command a year ago.
“The existence of a self-proclaimed organization is a threat to the civilized world and our way of life,” Funk said. “We have to defeat them, our joint efforts can defeat them.”
In a bid to establish a “caliphate”, the organization controlled many areas in Iraq and Syria in 2014, but the organization has suffered a series of defeats in recent months.
