Shafaq News / The US Chargé d’Affairs to the United Nations, Richard Mills, stressed on Tuesday the need to confront the Iranian-backed factions in Iraq, condemning the missile attack that targeted the city of Erbil.

Mills stressed, in a session of the United Nations mission to Iraq, “The Iranian-backed militias must be confronted in Iraq,” noting that the administration of the US President, Joe Biden, has a strategic plan to achieve stability in Iraq. 

Mills said that the UN report refers to the complex situation in Iraq, stressing that the United States will provide all necessary support to help the Iraqi authorities.  

He indicated the commitment of the United States to assist the Iraqi government and said, “America has provided more than $ 100 million in aid to Iraq, and we are also helping the Iraqi government to confront corruption.” 

For its part, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jenin Plasschaert, considered that these attacks target the stability of Iraq.

Plasschaert said, “We must focus on ending extremism and confronting threats on the ground in Iraq.”

The attack killed a civilian, a contractor with the US-led international coalition, and injured eight others, including an American soldier.

And the United States of America, through its Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the attack, which is considered the deadliest against its forces in nearly a year in Iraq.

The Pentagon: Erbil was bombed with 14 rockets

{International: Al Furat News} The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) revealed the details of the attack that targeted the American base in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The Pentagon said that the US in Erbil targeted by 14 rockets 4 including al – Qaeda hit the buildings in them. ”

He pointed out that the attack resulted in the killing of a civilian contractor and wounding five Americans , including one soldier.

In the tweet to him , said Col. Wayne Marotto , spokesman for the process of ” steel Torque “: “The Iraqi Joint Task Force confirms that 14 107 mm rockets were fired, with 3 of them landing inside the Eastern Province on February 15 at 21:30 Iraq time, and one civilian contractor (not an American) was killed and 9 others were wounded (8) Local contractors and one American soldier). ”

Several rockets fell on the city of Erbil, some of them in the Waziran neighborhood and another on the 40-meter street

The Security Media Cell said, in a statement, that “the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces directed the formation of a joint investigative committee with the competent authorities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, to find out who is behind the incident of a number of missiles falling on Erbil International Airport and its approaches on Monday evening, which led to A number of people were injured. ”
