, Sunday, the White House denied Iranian assurances that a prisoner exchange agreement had been reached between Washington and Tehran.
Iran announced that it had reached a preliminary agreement with the United States to exchange prisoners, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced on state television, Sunday.
Abdullahian expressed hope that the agreement would result in a prisoner exchange soon.
However, a White House official denied the Iranian statements, and said, “The United States is committed to securing the release of Americans detained in Iran.”
A White House National Security Council spokesman said, “The claims by Iranian officials that we reached an agreement to release American citizens wrongfully detained by Iran are false.”
The spokesman added, “Unfortunately, Iranian officials will not hesitate to make things up, and the recent harsh allegations will lead to more grief for the families of Siamak Namazi, Imad Sharqi and Murad Tahbaz,” referring to 3 Iranian-Americans with dual nationalities being held in Iran.
