U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Elena Romanowski spoke on Tuesday about the issue of regime change in Iraq and the dollar exchange rate.

“The issue of regime change belongs to the Iraqis themselves, and my focus is on expanding the 2008 strategic framework agreement between the United States and Iraq beyond security to a comprehensive relationship that achieves results for the Iraqi people,” Romanowski said in a statement followed by Al-Mala.

“We seek to consolidate the energy independence in Iraq, develop the private sector, improve the level of public services, expand relations between the two peoples, fight corruption, combat the climate crisis, and enhance Iraq’s security, stability and sovereignty,” she continued.

“We don’t control the exchange rate, and it’s not that the U.S. has nothing to do with this file, it’s best to describe this issue as the side effect of an economy moving away from cash-based transactions,” she said.

She renewed U.S. support for “the efforts of the Iraqi government and the Central Bank of Iraq to combat corruption and money laundering.”

“Some corrupt companies and entities previously used forged documents and collected requests to transfer funding abroad for fictitious purposes, and now this activity has been restricted,” she said.

“corrupt entities that hold dollars to speculate on currencies and companies that continue to import goods without a license through cash or informal channels,” it said.

She expressed her happiness “for the level of cooperation with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and there is a consensus between the White House and the Iraqi government palace on energy independence and support for the growth of the private sector.”
