Baghdad / Raed Al-Hamid / Anatolia

Iraqi media revealed on Monday that an American delegation is visiting the capital Baghdad in the coming hours, to hold talks with Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani on a number of files.

The website “Baghdad Al-Youm” (non-governmental) quoted informed sources, as saying that the US delegation will discuss with the Sudanese “the file of scheduling and deployment of US forces in Iraq.”

He added that Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein will soon travel to Washington to arrange the procedures for the Sudanese visit to Washington and meet with President Joe Biden.

The Iraqi website also pointed to “an upcoming visit by the US representative for the Middle East Brett McGurk to Erbil province in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq in the coming hours, during which talks will be held with officials there.”

There are gaps between Baghdad and Erbil on oil, administrative and security issues, and on more than one occasion Washington has called on the two governments to negotiate to resolve these differences.

There was no immediate comment from the Iraqi government about what Baghdad Today reported about the visit of the US delegation.

During his recent visit to Germany on Thursday, Sudani told the Wall Street Journal that he planned to send a senior delegation to Washington for talks with U.S. officials.

Al-Sudani explained that Iraq would like its relations with the United States to be similar to those enjoyed by Saudi Arabia and other oil and gas producing countries in the Gulf.

According to the American newspaper, Al-Sudani defended the presence of US forces in his country and did not specify a timetable for their withdrawal, stressing their importance in combating ISIS.
