Earth News / Today, Saturday, the US embassy in Baghdad called on the political parties to adhere to restraint and to refrain from violence.
“We are closely monitoring the disturbances that occurred today in Baghdad and are concerned about reports of violence,” the embassy said in a statement received by Earth News.
She added, “The right to peaceful demonstration and freedom of expression are guaranteed in the Iraqi constitution. We join our voice in calling on Iraqi political parties of all stripes to exercise restraint, refrain from violence and resolve their political differences through a peaceful process in accordance with the Iraqi constitution.”
The followers of the Sadrist movement stormed, for the second time in less than a week, the security-fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, to enter the parliament building and announce an open sit-in in its corridors, in protest against the nomination of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani for the position of prime minister.
