The two ruling parties in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq and the opposition parties reached, on Sunday, understandings regarding the importance of dialogue between them and the unity of ranks between the Kurdish parties, which may pave the way for an end to political differences that have been going on for nearly two years.

The two ruling parties are the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, while the opposition parties are the Kurdistan Islamic Union, the Change Movement and the Kurdistan Justice Group.

For years, political differences have prevailed between the two sides, but relations have been further strained for nearly two years, due to the nature of the region’s management of its economic resources and its relationship with the federal government in Baghdad.

The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region said, in a statement, that “the President of the Region, Nechirvan Barzani (from the Democratic Party), met separately today in Sulaymaniyah, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Bafel Talabani, the Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Islamic Union, Salah al-Din Bahaa al-Din, the leader of the Change Movement, Omar Syed Ali, and the head of the Kurdistan Islamic Union. Kurdistan Justice League Ali Babir.

The meetings witnessed “emphasis on the importance of dialogue between the political parties, harmony, joint action, and unity among the Kurdish parties,” according to the statement.

The presidency stated that “the parties were in agreement that addressing the differences between the parties and the unity of voice, especially between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, would have a positive impact on the general situation in the region and strengthen the position of Kurdistan in Baghdad.”

Barzani renewed, “emphasizing that the Presidency of the Region will continue its endeavors for unity and harmony between the parties, and it will remain an umbrella for all parties and components in the Kurdistan Region.”

The current parliament of the region includes 111 seats: 45 for the Democratic Party, 21 for the Patriotic Union, 12 for the Change Movement, 8 for the New Generation Movement, 7 for the Islamic Group, 5 for the “Towards Reform” list, one seat each for the Sardam List and the Communist Party, in addition to 11 seats for minorities.

Since the 1990s, the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq has enjoyed autonomy in security, political and economic aspects.

There are differences between the region and the federal government in Baghdad, especially over the region’s oil resources and sovereignty over many areas.
