Al-Sadr formed the largest bloc; the Framework considers its exclusion “a political suicide”

Shafaq News/ Two political sources revealed that the leader of the Sadrist Movement had created the largest parliamentary bloc that will be able to form the next Iraqi government.

A leader in the Movement, and another Sunni leader, told Shafaq News Agency, “Al-Sadr was able to form a large bloc that includes 180 deputies.”

Al-Sadr needs 165 members’ votes to form the next government.

The first session of Parliament is scheduled to be held next Sunday to elect the new speaker of Parliament and his two deputies.

Earlier on Friday, al-Sadr hinted at the political forces allied with him to form the next government, saying, “Any Threats will make us more resolute (Tasmeem bloc/ five seats), advanced (Takadum bloc/ 37 seats), and determined (Al-Azm bloc/ 14 seats) to reach an Iraqi democracy (Kurdistan Democratic Party/ 31 seats).”

The two sources added that smaller and independent political blocs also joined the new bloc of al-Sadr, who seeks to form a “national majority” government.

It is worth noting that according to the results of the elections, the Sadrist Movement won the highest number of seats (73.)

Compared with 2018 results, The Al-Fateh Alliance lost 31 seats, taking only 17 seats in the last elections.

The Shiite Coordination Framework, which includes the State of Law Coalition and Al-Fateh, renewed its call to “all representatives of the largest social component (Shiites), especially the brothers in the Sadrist bloc, to form the largest bloc to preserve this constitutional entitlement and the stability of the political process.”

A State of Law member, Aref Al-Hamami, warned that excluding his alliance from the next government is “a political suicide,” expecting new developments in the coming hours.

Al-Hamami told Shafaq News Agency, “The position of prime minister has become a constitutional right for the Shiite component, as well as the Iraqi presidency for the Kurdish and the speaker of parliament for the Sunni component.”

He added, “at present, the political statements are incorrect, and the coming hours will be full of surprises.”

“Eliminating the Coordination Framework from forming the next government  is political suicide, and its consequences are dangerous for the country’s future.” He warned.

The Framework and the Sadrist met frequently, but the main difference between the two sides still occurred.

On the shape of the government, Al-Sadr insists on a majority government while the Framework suggested a consensus.

Shafaq News/ Two well-informed political sources revealed, on Friday, that the leader of the Sadr movement had completed the formation of the largest parliamentary bloc that will be tasked with forming the next Iraqi government.

The two sources, one of whom is a leader in the Sadrist movement, and the other is a Sunni leader, told Shafaq News Agency, “Al-Sadr was able to form a large bloc that includes 180 deputies.”

The two sources added that Al-Sadr will present his bloc in the first session of the House of Representatives next Sunday, accompanied by the signatures of the deputies, as the largest bloc that will be tasked with forming the next government.

Earlier on Friday, al-Sadr hinted at the political forces allied with him to form the next government.

Al-Sadr said in a tweet, “The will of the people is a national majority government, and any external pressures will not deter us from that, and any threats will increase us (determination), (progress) and (determination) towards an authentic, free and fair Iraqi (democracy).”

He added, therefore, they should be aware that the strength of (the sect) is from the strength of Iraq and the strength of its sects and races… and that any prejudice to the reputation of the sect and the reputation of the resistance through spreading threats and violence will not work.

Al-Sadr was referring to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (31 seats), the Progress Alliance (37 seats), the Azm Alliance (14 seats), and the Design Alliance (5 seats), in addition to the Sadrist bloc, which came first in the elections with 73 seats.

The two sources said that smaller and independent political blocs also joined the larger bloc formed by al-Sadr, which seeks to form a “national majority” government, in contrast to the coordination framework that works to form a consensus government similar to previous governments.

Al-Sadr needs the votes of a majority of parliament members (half plus one), ie 165 members, to pass the next government.

The first session of Parliament is scheduled to be held next Sunday to elect a speaker and two deputies.

Shafaq News/ The head of the “Tasmeem” coalition in Basra Governorate, Amer Al-Fayez, announced on Friday that his coalition launched the initiative to form the “Reform of the Nation” grouping, revealing the first bloc that expressed a desire to join it.

Al-Fayez, who won five parliamentary seats, told Shafaq News Agency, “A design alliance launched the initiative to form a (Reform Homeland), and the first political blocs that expressed a desire to join it was the Sadrist bloc,” noting that “negotiations are still ongoing regarding join him.”

And he stated, “The Sadrists set a condition for joining the (Reform of the Nation), which is that the rule of law, led by Nuri al-Maliki, should not join it.”

Al-Fayez added, “Negotiations are still ongoing, as all the blocs wishing to join the gathering did not agree to the condition of the Sadrist bloc.”

He pointed out that if his coalition fails to form a “Reform of the Nation” grouping, it will remain neutral between the Sadrist bloc and the coordination framework and activate the alternative plan of bringing together all the independents who won the last elections (individuals and blocs) under one umbrella in the first parliament session.

The competition is still fierce between the Sadrist movement and the coordination framework to form the largest parliamentary bloc that will be entrusted with the task of forming the next government.

The Sadrist bloc topped the results of the elections that took place last October with 73 seats out of 329, followed by the “Progress” coalition with 37 seats, the “State of Law” coalition with 33 seats, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party with 31 seats.

Al-Sadr seeks to form a “national majority” government, in contrast to the coordination framework that works to form a consensual government similar to previous governments.
