UN Meets Donors to Discuss Development Strategy for Iraq

A high-level meeting between the United Nations and international donors took place in Baghdad to discuss the United Nations’ updated development strategy for Iraq.

The meeting focused on the 2020-2024 United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), which was signed by the Government of Iraq in September.

The UN was represented by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General, Irena Vojáčková-Sollorano (pictured), who also serves at the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator. Also present were representatives of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Iraq, which consists of 22 agencies, funds, and programs.

The donor community was represented by several Ambassadors and high-level representatives from embassies in Iraq, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, European Union, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The UNSDCF is the consolidated strategy for the UNCT to support the Government in meeting the needs of Iraqi people in economic growth, basic services, social protection, and the environment. The updated UNSDCF also has a new focus on durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) so that families displaced by the war against Daesh (ISIL) can return to their areas of origin or integrate into new communities.

“This is the time where we have to come together to support Iraq to emerge from this pandemic stronger, achieve safe durable solutions to displacement and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and towards a peaceful and prosperous society for all Iraqis. Together with the Iraqi society let us all harness resources and assets to make it happen,” said Ms. Vojáčková-Sollorano.

In the meeting, the UN agencies highlighted key interventions and efforts in supporting Iraq’s development priorities and Iraqis’ needs through 2024 while discussing the donors’ critical role in supporting this joint effort.

Barzani warns against tampering with the election results: it will deepen the existing crisis

Shafaq News/ Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani warned on Saturday of the possibility of attempts to tamper with the results of the parliamentary elections that took place last month, considering that such manipulation will cause a new problem and deepen the existing crisis in Iraq.

The warning came from Barzani, who heads the Kurdistan Democratic Party, during his meeting with the UN envoy to Iraq, Jenin Blackshart.

A statement issued by Barzani’s headquarters, received by Shafaq News Agency, said that Barzani and Plasschaert discussed the latest political developments in Iraq and the Iraqi Parliament elections that took place last October.

Barzani expressed his thanks for the efforts of the United Nations, the European Union and the international community to support the elections, noting that the elections were successful and that the preliminary results announced by the High Commission reflect the political reality in Iraq and the desire and will of the citizens.

Barzani pointed to the possibility of tampering with the results announced by the Commission, warning against any kind of manipulation that will result in other problems and cause a deepening of the current crisis.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party came in fourth place, winning 33 seats in the elections, behind the Sadrist bloc, the Progress Alliance, and the State of Law coalition.

Since the announcement of the preliminary results last month, Iraq has been experiencing political and security tensions, as a result of the rejection of the results by armed Shiite forces and factions, which they say are “fabricated”, and demand that all votes be recounted manually.

Fears prevail in the country that political and security tensions are a prelude to wider violence due to the rejection of the election results by the losers.

Shafaq News/ The Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq revealed today, Saturday, that it has sent all the results of the stations after re-counting and sorting to the Iraqi judiciary tomorrow.  

A member of the Commission’s media team, Imad Jamil, told Shafak News Agency, “The Commission will send, on Sunday, all results of stations, records, and appeals to the judicial authority.”

He added that “the judiciary will consider what was sent by the commission, and it needs an unspecified time according to its consideration of the results and records sent by the commission,” noting that the latter “will announce the final results of the elections after the judicial body has finished considering all the results and appeals.”

And last Thursday, the Independent High Electoral Commission announced the end of all re-counting and manual counting, at the request of forces objecting to the preliminary results.

Prime Minister: Our goal is for the Kurdistan Region to become an important commercial center
