The United Nations mission in Iraq said, on Tuesday, that the upcoming Iraqi elections are essential for the mission.
The resident representative of the United Nations Development Program in Iraq, Zina Ali Ahmed, said in a statement to “Nass” (September 21, 2021), that “the Iraqi elections are essential for the United Nations system operating in Iraq.”
She added, “The mission of the United Nations Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) is to help Iraq implement fair and transparent elections,” noting that “there is a large project led by the mission in which the United Nations Development Program is assisting it in a logistical way to help build national capacities to conduct elections in a fair and honest manner.”
And she continued, “The Security Council gave UNAMI the task of observing the elections, and therefore UNAMI, with the help of the entire United Nations system, will monitor the elections scheduled for next month, and we hope that these elections will bring the best possible to Iraq.”
