Gas pump nozzles at a gas station (File)

SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubakir said on Sunday (September 19) that Iraq’s Ministry of Oil is sending 1.8 million liters (475,500 gallons) of subsidized gasoline per day to the Kurdistan Region, but that the shipments only meet a portion of the Region’s needs.

Abubakir told Iraq’s state-owned newspaper al-Sabah that a shipment of Sulaimani’s share of gasoline provided by the federal governmentarrived over the weekend and been distributed to gas stations, some of which have begun selling it for 690 Iraqi dinars ($.047) per liter.

He said that Baghdad sells the gasoline to the Region for 650 Iraqi dinars per liter ($0.45), but it is then sold to drivers at the higher price.

“Of the 40 Iraqi dinar ($0.027) difference, 20 dinars ($0.014) goes to a transportation fee and the other 20 dinars [is profit] for the gas stations,” Abubakir added.

The Kurdistan Region needs 6 million liters (1.59 million gallons) of gasoline per day, he said.

A shipment of 360,000 liters (95,000 gallons) of subsidized gasoline arrived in Erbil on Wednesday, which was distributed to 28 gas stations.

Gas prices rose significantly in the Kurdistan Region this past year to 750 Iraqi dinars per liter ($0.51) for normal grade from 500 Iraqi dinars ($0.34) because of the devaluation of the Iraqi dinar and taxes imposed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Gas prices are significantly lower in federal Iraq, with normal grade gas sells for 450 Iraqi dinars ($0.31) per liter.
