Shafaq News/ A military commander in the Peshmerga revealed, on Monday, that an expected meeting was held between the Ministries of Defense and the Peshmerga, to implement the terms of the Joint Security Coordination Agreement, in the disputed areas.

The deputy commander of the second axis of the Peshmerga (Qarah Tabbah – Hamrin), Major General Muhammad Rostom, told Shafaq News Agency, “The meeting will discuss the implementation of the rest of the provisions of the joint coordination agreement in the disputed areas in Diyala and other provinces, after the opening of 4 security coordination centers earlier in Diyala and Kirkuk.” Nineveh and Makhmour.

Rustom added that there is “security coordination between the Peshmerga and the defense after the formation of the joint security coordination rooms to exchange security information, coordinate efforts to chase ISIS elements and secure security sectors and the movement of army and Peshmerga units according to military responsibilities.”

The military commander suggested implementing the rest of the terms of the joint coordination agreement “after completing the transfer and deployment of the first division of the Iraqi army in Diyala, and closing the security gaps in the disputed areas as much as possible, despite their vast and rugged areas.”

He stressed the reduction of the movements of ISIS elements in the areas of responsibility of the Peshmerga in the outskirts of Diyala and other governorates, due to “intelligence detachments, follow-up patrols and security monitoring, which prevented the organization’s elements from approaching the Peshmerga stationing points.”

The details of the joint coordination agreement between the Ministries of Defense and the Peshmerga include the opening of 4 joint coordination centers in Makhmour, near the Erbil borders, and in Kirkuk and Tuz Khurmatu, east of Salah al-Din, and Khanaqin in Diyala.

The first item of the agreement has been resolved, which is to start opening operations centers or joint coordination, while the three items of the agreement are still under negotiation and research between the two sides to agree on a final mechanism on them.

The withdrawal of the Peshmerga forces from the disputed and mixed population areas in 2017, created security vacuums, which turned into loose security partitions on the outskirts of Diyala, Kirkuk, Nineveh and Salah al-Din.
