Baghdad – Mawazine News
The United States announced that it will allow Iran to use frozen funds to pay off its debts to South Korea and Japan, in light of the continuation of talks to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement.
According to the sanctions in force, foreign companies dealing with Iran could be subjected to severe sanctions from the American authorities, Especially if it has interests in the United States or uses bank accounts in Iran.
The US State Department said Japanese and South Korean companies could receive payments from bank accounts targeted by US authorities for products that were exported before the Trump administration re-tightened the sanctions regime in 2019.
“This waiver does not allow any money to be transferred to Iran,” a State Department spokesman said, recalling that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had signed an earlier waiver and extended it for 90 days because “these payment transactions can sometimes take a long time.”
He explained that “the purpose of the exemption is to satisfy companies in Japan and South Korea, praising the allies’ steadfast support for all US and UN sanctions.” Ended 29 / h
