SULAIMANI — A foreign policy advisor to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Monday (April 5) that Barzani will meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in the coming days.
Falah Mustafa said that the purpose for the visit would be to discuss areas of disagreement between Erbil and Baghdad.
Speaking in Paris on Wednesday, Barzani announced his intention to meet with federal officials in Baghdad for talks.
The Council of Representatives recently passed the 2021 Federal Budget Law, which raised hopes that included a deal over the Kurdistan Region’s share. The development raised hopes that Erbil and Baghdad would make progress in resolving other areas of disagreement as well, including the disputed areas, oil, and other financial issues.
It remains to be seen if the budget deal will be implemented, with memories of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) immediate abrogation of the 2019 law by refusing to send oil to Baghdad for export still fresh in the minds of many.
