Shafaq News / The Parliamentary Finance Committee confirmed, on Wednesday, its inability to change the exchange rate of the Iraqi dinar against the US dollar, indicating that the exchange rate has stabilized after the approval of the 2021 budget law.

Committee member Jamal Cougar told Shafaq News that the reports about a parliamentary move to change the Iraqi dinar exchange rate against the US dollar are incorrect.

He indicated that the Parliamentary Finance Committee does not have any authority to change the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar, stressing that the Central Bank is the only body that has this authority and is able to change or return the exchange rate.

Cougar pointed out that the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar in the market will stabilize after the approval of the General Budget Law for 2021 in the House of Representatives.

Earlier today, Wednesday, Finance Minister Ali Abdul Amir Allawi announced his intention to take a package of measures that mitigate the effects of devaluation within two weeks.

Saleh officially ratifies Iraq’s accession to the Paris climate agreement

“The approval comes in order to face the threats posed by climate change and to address the emission of greenhouse gases and carbon,” Saleh said during his signature on the law.

The President of the Republic delivered the speech of Iraq at the global “Climate Ambition Summit” that took place on December 12, 2020, and announced that Iraq is heading towards a new era based on supporting renewable energies and reducing carbon emissions and pollution in response to climate changes, as well as supporting investment for the private sector, focusing on youth and supporting The role of women in economic development and climate action.

He added that Iraq, as a quick response to its accession to the Paris Climate Agreement, has begun writing the National Contributions Document (NDC) as the country’s supreme policy on climate change, and it establishes a green and sustainable economy and curbing carbon emissions.

Many world leaders and leaders participated in the summit, including Pope Vatican Francis, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron, Chinese President Xi Jinping, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the summit is hosting The United Nations, in association with France and Britain, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement.

It is noteworthy that the Paris Agreement is the first global agreement on climate. 

This agreement came after negotiations held during the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015. 

The agreement aims to contain global warming of less than two degrees and will seek to limit it to 1.5 degrees, targets for emission cuts, and set a minimum for its implementation of 100 billion dollars in climate aid for developing countries. Annually, this rate will be reviewed in 2025 at the latest.

On the occasion of Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, 175 heads of state signed in 2016 at the United Nations headquarters in New York under the name of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. This was the largest event ever for a large number of countries agreed in one day more than any time ago.

The Shafaq News Agency correspondent reported that the Central Bank of Iraq witnessed during its auction for the sale and purchase of foreign currencies a significant decrease in its sales by 76.09 percent to reach 3 million and 250 thousand dollars, which the bank covered at a base exchange rate of 1460 dinars per dollar, compared to yesterday, Tuesday, when it reached Sales of 13 million and 596 thousand dollars.

He added that the sales all went to boost the funds abroad in the form of transfers and credits, while no cash purchase was made.

Our correspondent indicated that only two banks have met the requests to enhance the funds abroad.
