Baghdad / Obelisk: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that his country would close its embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in case it continues to be targeted, in a phone call he collected with the Iraqi President, Barham Salih, last Sunday, a senior source in the Iraqi government told CNN.

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the issue, said Pompeo issued a final warning to the Iraqi government to take serious steps to stop the attacks on the American compound in Baghdad.

The news about the US Secretary of State’s warning came in conjunction with the two-day visit of the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, to Iran.

Hussein met the Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, on Saturday, and the second said during the meeting that Iran considers the presence of the American armed forces a factor destabilizing the security and stability of the region, according to IRNA.

Rouhani added: We have always supported the Iraqi people and the legitimate government at various times, and the most prominent example of this was helping the Iraqi people and the government during the terrorist attacks launched by ISIS across the country.

When CNN tried to contact the US State Department to comment on this news, its spokesman indicated that it does not comment on the private talks that Pompeo brings with leaders of other countries.

The spokesman said: We have announced our position before: The firing of rockets at our embassy is a threat not only to the Iraqi government, but to the neighboring diplomatic missions and the residents of what was known as the international zone and the surrounding areas, he said.

And the spokesman continued, saying: At a time when America is working to secure financial support for Iraq from the international community and various private sector institutions, the illegal presence of armed factions remains the single and largest factor to undermine investment efforts in Iraq, he said.
