Shafaq News / The “Patriot” missile system foiled at dawn today, Sunday, a missile attack that attempted to target the United States embassy in the heavily fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad.
Thus, the system had succeeded, and less than 24 hours after its installation, to repel the first missile attack by armed groups accused by officials in the American administration of being loyal to the regime in Iran.
A responsible security source told Shafaq News that the system installed yesterday succeeded in removing the Katyusha missile that attempted to target the American embassy at dawn today.
The source added, however, that the system was unable to remove it and bring it down, as usual, within the approaches of Al-Akhdarah.
Initial information indicates that the missile, after repelling, landed near the graduates of the Engineering College sit in front of the Green Zone gate, wounding five of them.
According to the information, the missile injured a child when it fell and damaged his family’s home.
On Saturday, security sources told Shafaq News that American forces tested the Patriot air defense system in the green zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, while the security company in charge of protecting the US embassy compound conducted a training operation that included firing shots and detonating loud sound bombs amid the whistling of sirens The alarm.
The sources also reported that a US airliner had bombed the Green Zone by air to test the effectiveness of the Patriot system.
The United States has deployed the Patriot system in several locations in Iraq to repel repeated missile attacks targeting its soldiers and diplomats by factions loyal to Iran.
The attacks specifically target the US embassy in central Baghdad and military bases that include US soldiers and diplomats across the country.
