Shafak News / A source in the office of First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hassan Al-Kaabi said on Tuesday that a special parliamentary committee headed by Al-Kaabi will discuss tomorrow, Thursday, the ministerial curriculum of Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Al-Kazemi.

The source said in a special statement to Shafaq News that “Al-Kaabi will chair tomorrow, Thursday, the members of the Parliamentary Committee formed by Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Al-Halbousi to study the ministerial curriculum of Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Al-Kazemi.”

Al-Kazemi’s office had reported on Wednesday that the latter had signed the ministerial curriculum for his prospective government and sent it to Parliament for review.

This step precedes submitting the names of candidates for ministerial portfolios in the prospective government to Parliament in order to determine a session later to consider whether to give confidence to the government or not.

Al-Kazemi, the third figure to be assigned by Iraqi President Barham Salih, to form a government on April 9 this 30 days, after his predecessors Adnan al-Zarfi and Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi failed to rally support for them.

In the event that Al-Kazemi obtains confidence from the parliament, the new government will succeed the government of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who resigned in early December 2019 under pressure from popular protests calling for the departure and accountability of the political class accused of corruption and waste of state funds.

For the government to obtain the confidence of Parliament (319 seats), an absolute majority vote (50 percent + 1) is required for the number of members present (not the total number) to grant confidence.

Initial indications were that Al-Kazemi won the support of most of the Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish political forces, which made belief prevail that his mission would be easy, unlike his Zarafi and Allawi predecessors.

However, differences have escalated in recent days over candidates for portfolios, especially within the Shiite house.
