ERBIL — Adil Abdul Mahdi, the former Iraqi Prime Minister who resigned from his position earlier this month, held a phone call with US Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Monday to discuss a range of issues including the recent rocket attacks which targeted the military bases home to US troops.
Esper, according to a press release, expressed concern over the increasing rocket attacks, urging Iraq to take the necessary measures to prevent the repetition of such incidents.
The former Iraqi PM, who now leads the cabinet until a new prime minister is appointed, also reviewed the developments in the international efforts against the Islamic State (IS) with Esper. They agreed that the military coordinations between Iraq and US should continue to eradicate terrorism.
On the ongoing protests in Iraq, Abdul Mahdi expressed concern over the possibility of further escalation in violence. He urged restraint to prevent deterioration of the fragile situation in Iraq.
