COUNCIL OF REPRESENTATIVES POSTPONES SESSION ON ELECTIONS, ELECTORAL COMMISSION

The building of Iraqi Council of Representatives (File)

SULAIMANI — The Council of Representatives on Tuesday (December 3) postponed a scheduled session to work on reforming the electoral law and the high electoral commission.

The Presidency of the Council of Representatives said the parliamentary committees needed more time to obtain information about the new election law and discuss it.

The session was delayed until further notice.

Electoral reform has been a key demand of protesters who have risen up against the government across central and southern Iraq over the past two months.

Parliament decided to amend the elections law and the high electoral commission law, but so far have only held a first reading of the draft.

On Sunday, the Council of Representatives accepted a letter of resignation from Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, who will stay on as caretaker.

President Barham Salih must now nominate a candidate for prime minister, but it is unclear how long that will take as the parties begin horsetrading to determine who should become Abdul Mahdi’s replacement.

The move came after the country’s top Shia Muslim cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani urged lawmakers on Friday to reconsider their support for a government rocked by weeks of deadly anti-establishment unrest.

Young, unemployed and unarmed protesters have led calls for a overhaul of a political system they say is endemically corrupt and serves foreign powers, especially Baghdad’s ally Tehran.
