BAGHDAD (Reuters) – An atmosphere of calm and optimism prevailed in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad after Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced his intention to resign, a local source said on Friday, adding that they were determined to stay there until all their demands were met.
The source told (Baghdad Today), “Tahrir Square witnessed today million demonstrations in which a large number of families participated, amid an atmosphere of great optimism after Abdul Mahdi announced his intention to resign from his position as prime minister, which the demonstrators considered their first victory.”
He added, “The demonstrators are determined to remain in Tahrir Square until all their demands are fulfilled, while stressing the demand of the Iraqi judiciary to hold those responsible to shed the blood of their colleagues,” pointing out that “calm prevails on the bridge also free.”
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, said he would submit to the House of Representatives, requesting his resignation, in response to the invitation of the religious authority.
Abdul Mahdi said in a statement received (Baghdad today), “I listened very carefully to the speech of the Supreme Religious authority on 29/11/2019 and stated that (in view of the difficult circumstances experienced by the country, and the apparent deficit in dealing with the authorities concerned with the developments of the two months The Council of Representatives, from which the current government emerged, is called upon to reconsider its options in this regard and act in the interests of Iraq and to preserve the blood of its people, and avoid sliding into a cycle of violence, chaos and devastation. ”
He added: “In response to this call and to facilitate and expedite the completion as soon as possible, I will submit to the House of Representatives the official letter requesting the resignation of the current government to enable the Council to reconsider its options.”
He warned that “the proximal and distant knows that I have already made this option publicly and in official notes, and in the interest of the people and the country.”
The highest religious authority represented by Mr. Ali al-Sistani, has seen, today, that the House of Representatives, which chose the government is invited to reconsider its options, and it is called to accelerate the adoption of a package of reform legislation to be in preparation for free and fair elections.
