U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday approved a waiver that enables Iraq to continue its vital gas and electricity imports from Iran without running afoul of American sanctions.

Two senior Iraqi officials confirmed the waiver was approved, just three days before the previous 90-day waiver was set to expire.

Pompeo praised “Iraq’s position, its growing role and its diverse relations in its Arab and regional environment and its efforts to maintain security and stability and avoid escalation, as well as the continued cooperation between the two countries against terrorism.” 
The Prime Minister stressed “the importance of developing bilateral relations and continuing cooperation in all fields, foremost of which is economic cooperation and tackling it.”
He also expressed “Iraq’s position on the current crisis and its efforts to achieve calm and protect the interests of the peoples and countries of the region.” He said that “the recent meetings and consultations in Baghdad on this file is of great importance and affects the security and interests of the countries of the region, Europe and the world.”
