Trump urges Japan to invest more in his country

Arab and international

Economy News _ Baghdad

US President Donald Trump has urged Japanese businessmen to increase their companies’ investments in the United States and said Japan has a large trade surplus with Washington, which negotiators are trying to offset.
Trump arrived in Japan earlier on Saturday for a state visit that includes many ceremonies and aims to show the strength of relations with Tokyo despite impending trade tensions. By evening, the Tokyo Skytree Tower had lit the colors of the United States flag in honor of Trump.
Shortly after a formal reception at the airport, the US president attended a reception at the residence of US Ambassador William Hagerty. The ceremony was held in the presence of Japanese businessmen from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Soft Bank and Rakoten, the White House said.
Trump said to senior Japanese business managers that there has never been a better time to invest in the United States than it is now. The US president reiterated his criticism of the US central bank’s policies and said it had blocked his country’s economy from reaching maximum growth.
He said he hoped to discuss the trade imbalance between the United States and Japan to ensure justice and reciprocity.
“Japan has had a huge trade advantage for many, many years,” Trump said. “It’s OK. Maybe you’re so impressed.”
“We hope, through an agreement, that we will be able to address trade imbalances, remove obstacles to exports from the United States, and ensure justice and reciprocity in our relationship,” he said.
Trade is one of the main issues of concern to Trump, and encouraging foreign investment in the United States is the hallmark of his trips abroad.
Trump will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday, playing a golf match, attending a Japanese wrestling match (Sumo) and then attending a dinner.
Trump and Abe have a friendly relationship that the Japanese prime minister is seeking to confirm while Washington is considering imposing tariffs on Japanese car imports, which Trump considers a potential threat to national security.
