Informed sources in New York said on September 14 that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich had obtained all the necessary approvals to appoint Kubić as the UN’s special coordinator for Lebanon after his mandate in Iraq. 
Kubic is the fifth UN envoy to serve in Iraq from 2015 to 2018, and took over the task of his predecessor, Bulgarian Nikolai Mladenov, who served in Iraq (2013-2015) and then named a special coordinator for the Middle East peace process in February 2015 and still in his position. 
It is noteworthy that Miladinov received his mission from the UN envoy, the German diplomatic source Martin Kobler, who led UNAMI in Iraq from 2011 to 2013 and after the end of his mission was transferred as an envoy in Libya and the end of his mission there in June 2017 and the Lebanese diplomat Ghassan Salameh the UN mission there.
Paradoxically, Salameh was also part of a UN delegation to Iraq after 2003 and almost died in the bombing of the UN building in Baghdad. 
Kubler took over the responsibility of UNAMI in Iraq from his Swedish predecessor, Stefan de Mistura, who also served in Iraq as UN envoy from 2007 to 2009, before being named UN envoy for the Syrian crisis in June 2014 and is continuing his mission.
