ERBIL – Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani received on Wednesday the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove and US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman to discuss the latest political and security developments across Iraq.
Chancellor Barzani, in his meeting with the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator where Ambassador to Iraq Ramon Blecua was present as well, underlined certain causes, including political ones, behind the re-emergence of the Islamic State (IS) in the liberated areas, specifically in disputed Kurdish territories, according to a statement by Barzani’s office.
“The pair stressed on the need for reconstruction and basic services in territories cleared from IS, rehabilitation programmes, and for regional countries to take a stronger lead combating extremist ideology,” the statement added.
The Kurdish top security official further underlined the relationship between the new Iraqi government and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Ambassador Blecua, in return, reaffirmed EU’s support for the Kurdistan Region’s security sector reform.
Meanwhile, the Kurdish leader, in a separate meeting, held talks with the US envoy on the political process of Iraq and the formation of a new government in the region, Barzani’s Press office said.
“During the meeting, both sides agreed that technical and security cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad can build the trust necessary to address the unresolved political disputes, welcoming the resumption of oil exports from Kirkuk as an important step forward in that effort,” the statement reads.
Barzani reiterated Kurdistan Region’s support for Iraqi PM Adil Abdul-Mahdi in filling the remaining ministerial posts and security portfolios in a manner that promotes cooperation and reforms.
They also reviewed the recent Kurdish high-level visit to Baghdad, Najaf and the Gulf.
