Washington welcomes Barzani’s visit to Baghdad and denies playing mediating role

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) – Washington welcomed the visit of the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Massoud Barzani to Baghdad, denying any role in mediating between the two sides.

“The US is encouraging dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil,” said US State Department spokeswoman Heather Noiret on Wednesday, while denying that there is “any role for the government of its country in the visit of the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party Massoud Barzani to Baghdad.”

Barzani held a visit to Baghdad several days ago, during which he held a series of talks with senior Iraqi officials in Baghdad, led by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, on the first visit since the independence referendum held by the Kurds last year.

“America did not have any role in the discussions that took place in that visit, but we always encourage the parties to dialogue to resolve all the contentious issues.” (1)
