RT got pictures of the lifting of the security barriers surrounding the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, which is scheduled to open parts of them on Sunday.

The pictures showed that the lifting of the barriers began from the street near the Iraqi parliament building and the Saudi Embassy, which is located in the good hotel next to Karkh of Baghdad.

Earlier, a source in the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told RT that “the process of opening the Green Zone will be partial, not total.”

He called on Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to open the area to citizens, stressing the need to implement this measure to break the barriers between them.

Former Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, during his term in office, ordered the reopening of the area, but it did not last a few days before it was closed to passers-by.

Shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, following the US invasion of the country, the area of 10 square kilometers of presidential palaces became home to government buildings and foreign embassies.
