Erbil (Iraq) – The declaration of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the party founded and headed by the late Kurdish politician Jalal Talabani, was not enough to resolve the controversy in Kurdistan over this site. That this position falls within the entitlement of the elections in this session.
Despite the formality of the majority of the post of President of the Republic in Iraq, but the importance lies in his concern, which is tasked the new prime minister to form the next government, in accordance with the Constitution.
The Union did not announce support for Saleh, even within the return of the latter to his ranks, after splitting after the controversy over “the involvement of the Talabani party in the arms of Barzani during the past years.”
Saleh belongs to the Federal Reformation, which had the confidence of Talabani, preferring a balanced relationship with Barzani for an eternal partnership that would allow Erbil, the stronghold of the Democratic Party, to dominate the Kurdish political decision at the expense of Sulaymaniyah, the stronghold of the Union.
Although the Barzani party had a clear vision of the efforts of the National Union to restore Barham Saleh and then nominated for the post of President of the Republic, since the beginning of the week, but he was surprised that the decision of the Talabani party.
The sources said “the Arabs” in Sulaymaniyah that “Saleh withdrew from the race to run for the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region, which will be held at the end of this month, after the National Union promised to nominate for the post of President of the Republic.
A spokesman for the Barzani party said that the post of President of the Republic of Iraq “a Kurdish maturity”, not a specific share of one party without another.
The spokesman stressed that the Kurdistan Democratic believes that this position falls within the circle of electoral eligibility this session, explaining that he has a candidate for the site without being disclosed.
The Kurdish political circles, three names, is said to be a candidate by the Barzani party for the post of President of the Republic.
Fadhil Mirani, a leader of the party, appears to be the closest candidate for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), after his rivalry with former finance minister Hoshiyar Zebari and Kurdistan Regional Government President Nigervan Barzani.
The Barzani Party on Thursday, postponed the selection of the President until after the elections in the Kurdistan region.
Barzani’s party is leading a massive propaganda campaign in Iraqi Kurdistan aimed at sweeping elections and dominating the regional parliament, which is responsible for the distribution of executive powers among the Kurdish parties.
If the Barzani plan succeeds, the Kurdish political forces will not be in a position to support a candidate for president without the approval of the Democratic Party.
The sources say that the alternative plan, which could be followed by the Barzani Party, if the Iraqi parliament did not respond to the request to postpone the election of the President of the Republic, is to push a strong candidate to meet Barham Saleh under the dome of the House of Representatives.
Barzani is counting on the support of Shiite and Kurdish forces for his candidate, who was involved in the process of inauguration of Mohammed al-Halbusi as speaker of parliament.
Therefore, leaders in the Barzani party talk about “the possibility of repeating the deal Halbusi with the candidate of the Kurdistan Democratic Party for the post of President of the Republic.”
But the confidence that seems clear in the Barzani party’s speech about his guarantee of the post of president may not be decisive when the rival candidate is Barham Saleh.
Saleh is widely regarded in both Shi’ite and Sunni political circles and has maintained constant contact with most of them, despite his departure from Baghdad in the last few years.
This relationship can be influential in directing the vote on the President of the Republic in Parliament towards Saleh, especially with the sensitivity that encapsulates the status of Barzani in Arab circles, after the experience of the referendum on secession, which he insisted in September last year.
The sources say that the features of the Kurdish candidate for the post of President of the Republic may be clear, on Sunday, with the opening of parliament the door of formal nomination for this post.
