Baghdad today _ follow-up

Iran announced on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, the resumption of electricity supply to Iraq after a break for more than a month.

“Iran has resumed supply of electricity to Iraq 10 days ago, after interruptions in Iraqi cities have provoked unrest,” Iran’s Deputy Energy Minister Mahmoud Reza was quoted by Tasnim news agency as saying.

“Iran now exports 200 to 250 megawatts of electricity to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said.

Tehran stopped supplying electricity to Iraq on July 6, 2018, because electricity bills were not paid and domestic consumption increased in Iran during the summer, energy officials said.

The power outage in Iraq has sparked protests in Basra and other cities.

Saudi Arabia last month offered to sell electricity to Baghdad at a discount as part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to reduce the influence of its rival Iran in Iraq. (Reuters).
