The Secretary-General of the United Nations said on Saturday that he closely followed the reports of air strikes on Syria, carried out by the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
Antonio Guterich said in a statement that the UN Charter is very clear in this regard, adding that the Security Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
Members of the Council called upon the Union and the exercise of that responsibility and urged all States Members of the United Nations to exercise restraint in such dangerous circumstances and to avoid any actions that might escalate the situation and increase the suffering of the Syrian people.
He expressed his deep disappointment at the failure of the Security Council to agree on a mechanism dedicated to effective accountability for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, urged the Council to fulfill its responsibilities and bridged the gap .
Gutierrez stressed that he will continue to engage with Member States to help achieve this goal.
The United Nations spokesman announced Friday that the Secretary-General would leave New York for Saudi Arabia to attend the League of Arab States summit.
