Iraqi Prime Minister announced on Tuesday evening, the intention of the Iraqi government to reopen airports Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan region soon, and the disbursement of salaries of staff of the region before the celebrations of the Norouz on 21 of this month.
“There are those who want to give a negative image of the federal government to the citizens of the region, and I promised to pay their salaries, and soon will take the decision to pay salaries and open airports while continuing the audit of data,” Haider al-Abadi told reporters at the government headquarters.
He added that ‘closing the airports of Sulaymaniyah and Erbil was not a retaliation and punishment for the Kurdish people, but to restore the national cohesion and balance between the two authorities, where now began technical procedures on the ground of the airport, and soon we will announce my order to start implementation.’
He explained that ‘the salaries of the employees of the region will be before the next Nooruz holidays, and we want to link the employee and retirees to one base in Iraq, and we worked this system and delete a lot of manipulators in the Iraqi provinces, and we want to do the same in the region and needs a great effort.’
The closure of airports Erbil and Sulaymaniyah and the salaries of employees of the Kurdistan region by the Baghdad government, came after a referendum on secession conducted by the region in September.
