[Asharq Al-Awsat] Khabad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, on Friday called on the United States to further organize the Peshmerga forces within the framework of the ministry concerned with its affairs, and in a modern manner.
This came during a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Karem, accompanied by a military delegation and a diplomat from his country, according to a statement issued by Talabani’s office.
The statement added that talks were held between Erbil and Baghdad in order to solve the problems between the two sides, and the American support for a serious dialogue between Arbil and Baghdad on the basis of the Iraqi constitution, especially on the reopening of airports in the Kurdistan Region to international flights and the provision of salaries to employees and workers in the region.
The delegation welcomed the ongoing dialogues between Erbil and Baghdad and expressed its support for its continuation. He pointed out that the factors of supporting the Kurdistan Region in the military aspect, organizing training for the Peshmerga forces and raising the professional level of these forces will enhance the friendly relations between Erbil and Washington.
The delegation considered that it is necessary for the Kurdistan Region to play its role in the present and future Iraq and in solving internal problems.
For his part, called Talabani America to support more to organize the Peshmerga forces within the framework of the ministry concerned with its affairs and to provide support for the continuation of dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad in order to find a quick solution to all problems, especially the reopening of airports in Kurdistan against flights and secure salaries for employees and workers in the region .
Talabani expressed readiness of the Kurdistan Region to expand dialogue and negotiations with Baghdad and normalization of relations with them, it is necessary to have US support for this matter.
