The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the official of the western axis of Kirkuk in the Peshmerga forces Kamal Karkuki said on Thursday evening that the main road between Erbil and Kirkuk will be reopened next week, pointing to the opening of the road between Erbil and Makhmour district on the same date, Days.
He stressed that the decision was taken in the presence of President Massoud Barzani.
The road between the provinces of Erbil and Kirkuk has been closed for about four months after the re-militias of the popular crowd and other Iraqi security forces control the city of Kirkuk and other Kurdish areas outside the administration of the Kurdistan Region or called “disputed” on 16 October last and its intention to expand to Areas near Arbil.
The Peshmerga forces then confronted more than 12,000 of these militias and heavily armed Iraqi forces with the latest weapons, including the American Abrams tanks, at the town of Berde, between Erbil and Kirkuk.
Karkuki stressed that the Peshmerga forces will remain fully ready and stationed in their current positions to protect the areas in which they are located.
Karkuki also pointed out that the Kurdistan Region will open the way for his part, but remains the responsibility of the Iraqi party.
