Ba’athist elements began to flee deep into the western desert of Iraq after a major offensive launched by the security forces to hunt down their last members.

According to intelligence agencies of popular mobilization factions, “the escape of elements calling from their headquarters to the depth of the desert of Mosul and Salah al-Din and Anbar after the rapid progress made by the pieces of the crowd supported by the Iraqi army.”

On Thursday, Iraqi forces launched their latest military operations in Western Sahara along the border with Syria to hunt remnants of the militant group after three years of control over a third of the country’s territory.

This operation is the latest operation that is expected to announce at the end of Prime Minister Haider Abadi the final defeat of Daish in Iraq.

In its daily reports, the US-led International Alliance noted that no air strike was carried out on Thursday as military operations in the desert began.

“We can support the Ninth Division, but not the popular crowd,” coalition spokesman Col. Ryan Dillon told AFP.

The Joint Operations Command announced that since the beginning of the operations it had cleared 77 villages, equivalent to about 5,800 square kilometers.

In this process, Iraq is culminating in its continuous attack since 17 October 2016 against militant strongholds, from Mosul, which took nine months of bloody fighting, to Tal Afar and Hawija to the north, to Anbar in the west.
