Kurdistan calls on the international community to pressure Baghdad to stop military movements

The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Nezhirvan Barzani, said during a meeting with the new Swedish ambassador to Baghdad, Puntus Melander, in Arbil, on Thursday, the international community to pressure the Iraqi government to stop its military moves against the Kurdistan Region and to resort to dialogue and negotiation to solve the problems between Arbil and Baghdad .
“Barzani said that the region has been and continues to believe in the principle of dialogue and stresses that the current tensions and violence will not solve the issues,” Barzani said in a statement to the news agency. He stressed that Baghdad and Erbil should begin dialogue to resolve the outstanding problems between them.
The statement added that Barzani, in his meeting with the Swedish ambassador, called on the international community to pressure Baghdad to stop the tensions and military movements in the region and to create a suitable ground for serious dialogue between Arbil and Baghdad.
Barzani pointed out that the political leadership and the Kurdistan Regional Government announced through several official letters support for dialogue and negotiation pointing out that the provincial government has recently sent a message to the Iraqi public and the Kurdistan and the world to immediately stop the fighting and freeze the results of the referendum and start a serious dialogue.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) offered Wednesday the initiative to stop military operations, freeze the results of the referendum and start a serious dialogue to resolve problems with Baghdad. The United States welcomed the initiative, but Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi said he would not accept Cancel referendum.
Clashes erupted between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi forces and the popular crowd after the latter attacked the positions of the Peshmerga within the areas of Zamar and Rabia. The Peshmerga forces announced that they had confronted and defeated the forces in an official statement.
