The US State Department called on the Baghdad government to avoid clashes in northern Iraq by limiting the movement of federal forces in the disputed areas to those that are coordinated with the Kurdistan Regional Government.

“Re-asserting the federal authority over the disputed areas does not in any way change its status … it remains in dispute until its status is resolved under the Iraqi constitution,” she said.
