The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the head of the delegation of the Supreme Council for the referendum in the Kurdistan Region, Rose Nuri Shaways, said on Tuesday that the delegation, which is currently visiting Baghdad, refused to postpone the date of the referendum on independence from Iraq on 25 of next month.
Shaways said in a press conference from Baghdad that “the delegation refused to postpone the date of the referendum, because it is now the hands of the people of Kurdistan, and the largest part of it now demands to be conducted on time and not to postpone.”
On the meetings held by the delegation in Baghdad, Shaways said, “We held a meeting with Mr. Abadi and it lasted for three hours, and we discussed a lot of issues related to resolving the outstanding problems between Erbil and the federal government, and explained the reason for our approach to the referendum, .
He added that “dialogue and negotiations are the best way to solve the problems, and the parties insisted on not to put any preconditions during the meetings, and we can say that it was a positive meeting.”
As for the positions of the countries visited by the delegation of embassies in Baghdad, Shaways said, “all the embassies that we have visited welcomed the visit of the Kurdistan delegation to Baghdad, and stressed the need for dialogue and understanding to solve the problems, expressing their readiness to help in the success of these dialogues. The reason for our approach to the referendum on the independence of the Kurdistan Region. “
