The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by outgoing Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani, said on Sunday that the United States would not reject the referendum.
“The United States is not opposed to the referendum on the independence of Kurdistan to be held next September, but it is opposed to the timing,” said MP Najibah Najib. “America is holding referendums on the simplest of things, so how to reject the Kurdistan referendum.”
Najib said that “Washington has to determine the appropriate time for the referendum and we are ready to postpone it,” pointing at the same time, “the Kurdish delegation that will visit Baghdad will discuss all issues.”
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told Barzani during a telephone conversation with him that the White House refused to hold a referendum on the independence of Kurdistan, while the latter confirms that it is continuing to hold the referendum.
