Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s office revealed on Sunday the number of citizens receiving salaries from the state, pointing out that the financial commitments resorted to the government to “austerity policy.”

“Seven million citizens are receiving monthly salaries from the state and more than four trillion dinars per month, in addition to other financial obligations of the government to farmers and contractors, and spending on important sectors such as education, health, electricity and basic services,” said Saad al-Hadithi, a spokesman for the office.
