ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have not held a phone conversation in the past few days, said a spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency on Saturday.
The statement is in response to several media reports claiming that Barzani and Tillerson had discussed Erbil’s plan to hold an independence referendum on 25th September this year.
Spokesperson Omed Sabah called these reports “untrue”.
The media reports had also claimed that Tillerson expressed his country’s opposition to the independence referendum.
Kurdistan Region has set the polls on statehood for 25th September. Barzani has made it clear in a previous interview that there is “no turning back” on the move.
