Barzani Visits Brussels for Talks with EU on Independence

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, heading a high delegation, set off on an official trip to Europe on Monday to hold talks with European officials over the independence of Kurdistan Region and the forthcoming referendum.

Barzani is leading a delegation consisting of representatives of Kurdistan Region’s parties as well as ethnic and religious components. The high-level delegation will discuss Kurdistan Region’s referendum on independence with the European officials in Brussels.

The visit comes after Barzani met with the Referendum High Committee members in Erbil to discuss future steps that needs to be taken for preparations of the September 25 referendum. In the meeting, a number of delegations were formed for negotiations with Baghdad, neighboring countries, and world powers.

Kurdistan Region has planned to hold a plebiscite on secession from Iraq on September 25, 2017.
