Hoshyar Zebari and Iranian Envoy to Erbil Discuss Independence Referendum

ERBIL — Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) politburo, discussed on Tuesday the upcoming referendum on Kurdistan Region independence with Mortaza Abadi, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Erbil.

Hoshyar Zebari, former Iraqi Finance and Foreign minister, said in a statement he posted to his Facebook account on Tuesday that he received the Iranian consul general and his accompanying delegation in Erbil. He noted that during the meeting they discussed bilateral ties between Erbil and Tehran as well as Kurdistan Region independence referendum.

Iran is the only country which has officially voiced its opposition to the referendum on Kurdistan Region’s independence, saying the vote would lead to “new problems.”

“The Kurdistan Region is part of the Iraqi Republic and unilateral decisions outside the national and legal framework, especially the Iraqi constitution… can only lead to new problems,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Bahram Ghasemi said on June 10.
