Baghdad / Al-Ghad Press:
The US ambassador to Iraq, Douglas Seelman, on Wednesday, his country’s efforts to return the money smuggled from Iraq in the time of the former regime, noting that some of those funds that were hidden were returned.
“America has been working for several years to determine where Iraqi money went in the time of the former regime,” Sulliman said in a response to a reporter’s question at a press conference at the US embassy in Baghdad.
“In the past 13 years, some of the money that has been hidden has been returned to the government and the people,” he said, adding that “there are dialogues with the Foreign Ministry to return the smuggled money.”
“There are funds left in some countries and their laws do not allow the return of funds because some do not know their accounts,” he said, noting that “this is one of the priorities of Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and we work with him to return funds as much as possible.”
It is noteworthy that the Integrity Commission, had confirmed in 2014, that the money smuggled in the countries to be retrieved amounted to trillions and $ 14 million, noting that there are some obstacles in the subject of receipt of the defendants and the recovery of funds for the different internal systems.
