A US warship fired warning shots at a compound of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which approached it in the waters of the Gulf region, a US military spokesman said.
Lieutenant-General Rick Chernitzer said the US destroyer USS Mahan faced “unprofessional behavior” by the Iranian boat after it approached it up to a distance of 1005 meters, adding that the Iranian boat had moved away after several warning shots.
Gulf waters have seen similar incidents with Iranians, particularly in 2015 and early 2016, before falling. The US Department of Defense counted 23 incidents in 2015 and 35 in the first half of 2016, most of which dates back to August 2016.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard boats are regularly approaching US ships in the Gulf waters and the Strait of Hormuz and do not answer radio communications by US ships and do not reveal their intentions.
