Baghdad / Al-Ghad Press:
BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Vice President Nuri al-Maliki on Wednesday warned of plans to target the country’s political situation, while the US ambassador in Iraq stressed that his country stood by the Iraqi people in its fight against terrorism.
“During his meeting with US Ambassador to Baghdad Douglas Allen Sulliman, he discussed with him the relations between the two countries and issues of mutual interest, as well as developments on the regional fronts and the conduct of the Nineveh Liberation operations,” Maliki’s office said in a statement received by Al-Ghad Press.
“Maliki has made it clear to Suleiman that an imminent threat will soon be removed, given the significant progress made by the security forces and the popular mobilization in Mosul and the rest of the operational divisions,” the statement said.
Maliki warned, according to the statement, of “plans aimed at the political situation in the country against the backdrop of the challenges in the region,” stressing that “Iraqis reject foreign interference in the affairs of their country.”
He pointed out that “the unity of Iraq and its people are the safety valve in the face of any targeting, which are the guarantors of any external designs, calling on the United States to continue to support Iraq in the fight against terrorism.”
For his part, the US ambassador stressed that “his country stands by the Iraqi people in its battle against terrorism.”
